The French 'Orientalist' author, intellect, archaeologist and artist Prisse d'Avennes (1807-1879) was one of the greatest of the pre-20th-Century travellers to the Middle-East. This fine original handcoloured lithographic print here of a lady reclining on a silk upholstered sofa, her slippers on the floor and with a feather fan and smoking hookah pipe to the right, is one of the most sought after images from his large folio publication "Oriental Album: Characters, Costumes, and Modes of Life, in the Valley of the Nile".

The print is sometimes referred to in French as "Femme égyptienne dans un harem au caire" ("Egyptian women in a harem in Cairo").
