    A caricature portrait of the British peer John Alexander Thynne, 4th Marquess of Bath (1831-1896). The Marquess succeeded to his title when he was only was only six years old. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and served as a diplomat and foreign envoy. He was a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum. He also  served as Deputy of Lieutenant of Somerset and Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire.

    Lettered beneath the image "Ancient lineage" and with the publication details "VANITY FAIR" top left; "June 13 1874" top right; "Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Lt.d Lith." lower left. Signed with Carlo Pellegrini's "Ape" signature (within the image).

    Originally appeared as Vanity Fair "Statesmen. No. CLXXV (175)".
