Original British Railways Shildon cast iron wagon plate 32 ton No.358252, 1976

Introduction to Railway Wagon Plates

Freight wagons used throughout the British Railways network were fitted with cast plates identifying their construction details. These plates typically recorded the wagon’s capacity, the works that built it, and the production lot or batch number.

Description

This original British Railways wagon plate is cast in iron and marked with the wagon number 358252 together with a 32 ton capacity. The plate also records that the wagon was built at Shildon Wagon Works in 1976, with the casting further marked Lot No 3864 which relates to the manufacturing batch.

Plates of this type were mounted on the body of freight wagons and were exposed to years of industrial use and weather, giving surviving examples their distinctive worn surfaces.

Today these pieces are collected as part of railwayana, representing the engineering history of Britain’s railway freight network.
