About this item
This is a nice Jacobean period silver finger ring, dating to the early 17th century. The outer band is decorated with single beaded border, similar to that found on posy rings (NMGW-9F38B2 ) that have been dated to the Tudor and Stuart periods. This example is unusual in that it bears a makers mark on the outer band (not stamped inside), the maker's mark appears to be I.I. as yet to be identified. Posy rings bore an inscription inside the band, visible to only the giver and receiver. These rings were given as betrothal gifts or wedding rings. This example bears no inscription inside the band, so would have been more suited as a wedding band.
