About this item
A very unusual flat weave Yastik from the European part of the Ottoman Empire. Circa 1910.
104cm x 54cm (41 x 21 inches).
The highly stylised figures and stepped motifs utilise a wonderful soft palette over the striking bright pink ground, the whole being an accomplished, harmonious and strikingly modern work. It appears very much to be conveying a story: the alternate juxtaposition of abstract blocks of colour with human-like figures, the way the colours and shapes shift and flow from panel to panel leave you trying to read the design and solve the narrative.
Condition is superb, ends and selvages are original and in excellent condition. No losses, repairs or damage. Colour is strong. There are some small marks/staining, visible on the images, these do not detract from what is a very beautiful piece.
