An attractive woodcut vignette, clipped from an edition of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia universalis (the first description of the world in the German language). The Cosmographia contained 471 woodcuts and 26 maps over six volumes. It was first published in 1544 and by 1628 there had been at least 35 editions. It was widely referred to in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with the text, woodcuts and maps all influencing geographical thought for a generation.
