About this item
A striking and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century carved ebony elephants, dating to circa 1890.
Each elephant has been individually carved and is modelled in a naturalistic striding pose. Particularly distinctive is the richly textured treatment of the bodies, giving the surfaces a tactile quality and adding considerable depth and character to the carving.
The dark ebony is beautifully contrasted by the elephants carved wood tusks, together with finely inset details to the eyes and toes. The combination of wood accentuates the expressive features and gives the pair a particularly handsome presence.
Over time, the ebony has developed a deep, lustrous patina, highlighting the grain, carved detailing and natural variations within the timber. Their opposing movement and closely matched proportions make them especially effective displayed together.
Both elephants remain in good condition, with no significant breaks, a few toe nails missing, minor surface wear and chips and variations that are consistent with their age and contribute to their character.
