About this item
This is a superb medieval bronze seal, dating to the 15th century. The seal is of a 'chessman' type with a trefoil handle. It is nicely cut with a device of a knife emblazoned on a shield. The legend is inscribed in a Blackletter script, reading as " S * guilliame * de * garlen *" This would translate as "the seal of William De Garlen?" The original seller of this seal sold it as from a Cutler, advertising the object of his profession, at the same time this could also relate to a mercenary or hired knife. The seal was purchased from an old collection formed in Strasburg in France, it is in excellent condition with a nice patina.
