About this item
This is an ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 3rd century AD. It is set with its original carnelian intaglio, cut with a representation of a River God sinking a galley. The body of the ring is decorated with volutes This example has survived in excellent wearable condition, being recovered from the silts of the Danube river in Germany. The intaglio would have acted as a private signature, to authenticate letters and transactions.
