    About this item

Rare Staffordshire St Augustine Rabbitware Frogs Pub Mug c1900

    Rabbits

    St. Augustine Ware ~  England ~ c.1900

This is a rare colorful hand painted transferware mug  from the genre of rabbit ware plates that have become very popular.

Measuring 4 1/4 inches tall x 5 inches wide.  The mug is decorated with rich chocolate brown transfer print which was then hand painted in a brilliant green, yellow, brick red and brown, depicting two rabbits and a maiden in the English countryside.

The piece recites the amusing rhyme, " Noah was the very first man  But he missed a treat to make a brewing vinous; When he failed to meet That merry old blade Gambrinus. "

Gambrinus is a legendary European culture hero celebrated as an icon of beer.

Great antique Pub mug.  Never Used and in great condition.
