About this item
An strikingly unusual large Viennese Jugendstil (Youth Style) silver plated serving tray with carrying handle with makers mark for Argenter-Werk Rust & Hetzel, Circa 1900.
Jugendstil ("Youth Style") was an artistic movement, particularly in the decorative arts, that was influential primarily in Germany from about 1895 until about 1910. It was the
German counterpart of Art Nouveau. The dominant forms of Jugendstil were organic shapes and lines that were at once simple and dynamic.
Argentor-Werke Rust & Hetzel, founded in 1902 and managed by Georg Ferdinand Rust and Adolf Wilhelm Hetzel, became one of the most important metalware manufacturers of the Viennese Art Nouveau movement. Production included not only silver serveware, bowls, centerpieces, tea and coffee services, but also home furnishings.
