About this item

A charming early 20th century polychrome chalkware figure depicting a kneeling boy in a quiet, contemplative pose, holding a shallow tray across his knees. The subject is rendered with expressive sensitivity, from the softly modelled facial features and downcast gaze to the naturalistic folds of his clothing and the relaxed positioning of his bare feet.

Finished in warm tonal washes of ochre, brown, and flesh tones, the figure retains much of its original hand-painted surface, lending it a gentle, time-worn character. The sculptor has captured a still and introspective moment, giving the piece an understated emotional quality that sits comfortably within both traditional and more eclectic interiors.

Raised on its original integral base, the figure has a notable sense of depth and presence, allowing it to function as a sculptural focal point within a room. Pieces of this scale and subject matter were popular in the early 20th century, produced as decorative objects for mantel or display.

The underside bears an impressed Registered Design number (Rd. 817899), indicating a British registered design dating to the early 20th century, most likely within the 1930s.

A decorative and evocative example of period chalkware, offering both sculptural interest and nostalgic appeal.

Condition Report

Structurally sound with no major breaks or repairs observed.

There is visible surface wear consistent with age and the nature of chalkware. Areas of paint loss are present, most notably to the hair, shoulders, arms, and edges of the base. There is general scuffing and abrasion to higher points such as the knees, hands, and feet, along with minor marks and surface rubbing throughout.

Some losses to the darker painted areas reveal the lighter substrate beneath. The base shows chips and wear to the edges, and there is light surface dirt and an overall age-related patina.

Despite this, the figure presents well, and the condition is in keeping with examples of this type and period.
