An extremely fine pair of French cabinets from the workshops of Edmond Poteau of 59 Rue de Turenne, Paris (with maker’s stamp ). Created from beautifully figured satinwood and having variegated marble tops with superb gilt bronze mounts throughout. Both of inverted breakfront form with 2 frieze drawers above 2 door cupboards with shelved interiors and working espagnolettes with keys. The stiles having honey suckle gilt bronze mounts above classic female heads with applied square and tapering columns leading to the breakfront frieze with further embellishments and raised on short tapering legs with square sabots mounts. The sides with conforming quartered satinwood panels and gilt bronze mounts. The interiors have good polished mahogany linings. The condition of this pair of cabinets is very fine. HISTORY- Edmond Poteau had a workshop on the Rue Mignon from 1856-1874 and then moved to 59 Rue de Turenne staying in business until the late 1890s. Poteau was known for his cabinetry that reflected Transitional and Louis XVI aesthetics, with an emphasis on fine marquetry and parquetry inlay. In 1934 his widow gifted one of his commodes, a copy of a model by Dubois, to the museum of Versailles.
