About this item
This is an interesting medieval bronze seal, dating to the 15th century. The seal is of a 'chessman' type. It bears an inscription in Blackletter script reading to me as "S Wiliame de la Blizie" (Seal of William of the Bieze). The armorial displays a shield with a chevron accompanied by two trefoils, one in the dexter chief and the other in the sinister free quarter and at the tip of a six-pointed star surmounted by a crescent. Through research we find a fief called (Bieze) held by the seigneury of la ponte in (Bas Warneton) in Belgium on the border.
The seal is in excellent condition with a nice deep apple-green patina.
