    About this item

Hallmarked in London in 1789 by Hester Bateman, this very attractive pair of George III, antique sterling silver wine coasters, feature engraved and pierced decoration to the bodies, and shaped rims. Each wine coaster measures 1.75"(4.5cm) tall, by 4.75"(12cm) in diameter. The marks are rubbed but enough of the date letter 'O' and the lower H.B in script for Hester Bateman remain to firmly attribute these coasters to her workshop. I have also found another almost identical set here. and they have just two years between them I have included the last picture which shows a clear makers mark.

Literature: Wine coasters were not made until the 1760’s when they were produced from pierced sheet similar to the cake baskets of that date. They were usually made in pairs, sometimes fours, but it is rare to find an antique set larger than four.

The silver hallmarks were often stamped on the edge of the base and as a result, the marks can sometimes be difficult to read, either because they were badly struck or because, over the years, they have become rubbed.

This is a rare set from this much-respected lady silversmith
