About this item
A lovely pair of George III silver bottle coasters with plain polished walls and gadrooned rim. The turned wood discs are fitted with a silver boss engraved with a family crest of an armoured leg. The same image is engraved to the side and opposing this is a coat of arms with the motto "Sola Virtus Invicta" (Virtue alone is invincible). Hallmarked for London 1814, maker's initials EB. The central silver bosses are also marked with the lion passant.
They measure 13.5cm (5 3/8") wide (able to hold bottles up to 12cm (4 3/4") wide) and 4.5cm (1 3/4") high. They weigh 500g.
Condition is very good: there are a few minor bruises to the lower rims. No repairs and minor handling wear. The hallmarks are slightly obscured as is often the case by their being placed right on the edge on the lower rim.
