About this item
A rare English hallmarked silver bone holder of plain polished form with flared mushroom shaped end with circular decorative finial. There is a steel collar and shaped section inside the top to help grip the bone. The steel screw to hold the bone in place has a silver scallop shell handle, seamed from 2 cast sides, not solid, and this is part is not hallmarked.
The holder is hallmarked for Sheffield 1844, makers Hawkesworth, Eyre & Co.
It measures 13cm (5 1/8") long and 4.5cm (1 3/4") wide rim to rim (7.3cm (2 7/8") with the screw). It weighs 125g /4.0ozt without the screw. The hole for the bone to fit measure 3cm at its narrowest and 3.3cm from the shaped area to the opposite rim to give an idea of the size of bone it will take.
Condition is very good with no damage or dents to the main body. The shell handle on the screw has 3 very small holes along the seam but it still very solid and perfectly able to do its job. Light surface wear, a very little rubbing to the maker's mark only.
