About this item
Introduction to Mid-Century Cloisonné Silver
Mid-century decorative silver reached a peak of technical complexity through the refinement of cloisonné, an ancient art form that uses fine wires to map out intricate patterns for gemstone-coloured enamels. During the 1950s and 60s, master enamellers produced limited runs of high-quality vanity accessories that combined traditional botanical motifs with the high-purity sterling silver required for the luxury export market. These pieces are celebrated for their glass-like finish and the vibrant mineral pigments that remain as vivid today as when they first left the kiln.
Description of the Enamel Bottle
This perfume flask is a substantial piece of sterling silver, featuring a tapered oval profile that fits comfortably in the palm of the hand. The entire body is transformed into a miniature tapestry of "thousand flowers," with dozens of individual blossoms hand-painted in shades of pink, yellow, and white. Every petal is defined by an ultra-fine silver wire, set against a saturated emerald-green ground that has a deep, lustrous quality.
The craftsmanship extends to the matching domed cap, which continues the floral theme and sits flush against the threaded silver neck. The base is left in a plain, polished silver to highlight the quality of the 925-grade metal, providing a clean contrast to the ornate enamel work above. Weighing in at 62 grams, the flask has a tactile, heavy-gauge feel that reflects its status as a premium mid-century accessory.
Condition
The enamel surface is well-preserved.There are small losses to the top of the lid, while the screw-top remains smooth and secure.
Why You Should Buy
The density of the floral pattern is so rich that every time you pick it up, you notice a tiny detail in the petals or the scrolling vines that you hadn't seen before.
