An exquisite 19th Century sterling silver bottle holder and perfume bottle. The bottle holder of circular form, intricately and beautifully embossed with an elaborate repousee Neoclassical garden scene depicting two noble gentlewomen and a minstrel. Dated Chester, 1899, by Henry Matthews.
Henry Matthews
Henry Matthews was a Birmingham based silversmith; his first mark was registered in 1894. His office was on Vittoria Street, Birmingham - a street that is famous for being part of the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Matthews is particularly remembered for his small silver items that required great attention to detail. Examples of those items are hairbrushes, bottle holders, cigarette cases, frames, hat pins, card cases and buttons amongst other items.
