    About this item

An exceptional Georgian silver Babies Rattle, dating to the mid 18th century. This Georgian silver rattle has a Rococo embossed body and retains its original coral teether stick which would not only have soothed aching gums but was also thought to have the property of protecting the baby from evil spirits. There are two tiers of jangly bells (8) and a whistle. The bells appear all original and in excellent condition. The whistle works and is loud. The tip of the whistle bears the makers mark of a crowned S.D in script, for Sandylands Drinkwater (see attached images). This is a very well respected silversmith who made quality rattles for the elite children of London, being based at the Hand & Coral, Gutter Lane, Cheapside, London. Large rattles like this would have been used by nursemaids as a prop to gain the attention of the child. An excellent object in perfect working condition.
