About this item
A wonderful and very rare Victorian Bon Bon Drum or Barrel, always highly sought-after in this Ceremonial Drum form. Made from English Oak, the fittings are made from silver plate with the lid topped with a finial in the form of a pair or drum sticks against an open piece of sheet music, both lavishly gilded. The interior retains the original glazed cream colour ceramic liner. The swing handle has a belt and buckle detail incorporated into it, with twisted rope thread and brass rivet screws surrounding the oak drum. C1890
Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne. When the partnership was dissolved in 1871 John Grinsell started a new business with his four sons (Thomas Bywater Grinsell, James Erazmus Grinsell, Lorenzo Grinsell and Joseph Charles Grinsell) known as John Grinsell & Sons.
The drum is unmarked but undoubtedly by John Grinsell & Sons, with a serial 1537 along the rim, this truly is a thing or quality and beauty, a fantastic piece for any collector. Remains in excellent condition.
