Chinese tripod hanging incense burner with pierced qilin mask design in white metal c.1900

Introduction to Chinese censers

Chinese censers have been used for centuries in temples, homes, and ancestral rituals, forming an essential part of incense-burning traditions. They appear in a wide range of forms, including tripod vessels, hanging types, and openwork containers. Designs often incorporate symbolic animals, floral scrolls, or sacred motifs, reflecting both religious significance and decorative style.

Description of the censer

This cast white metal censer features a bulbous pierced body raised on three legs, suspended from a trio of chains that meet at a hanging ring. Its domed lid is topped with a lotus-style finial and has pierced floral panels for smoke release.

The body is richly decorated with raised scrollwork and pierced motifs, framed by borders of Greek key patterning. Each side carries a qilin mask handle with loose ring suspensions, which connect to the chains.

Condition

The metal surface shows general wear and patination. The chains, lid and structure remain complete and functional.

Why You Should Buy

It’s a bold, characterful piece that still carries the scent and presence of the rituals it once belonged to.
