About this item
On either side of this Westerwald stoneware jug, amongst all the other raised medieval decoration, are raised busts, and at the front and also below the handle, are faux heraldic shields. These are surrounded by ornate frames. The colouring of the jug is done in a rich cobalt blue with dashes of a manganese brown, set against the grey of the body. Probably a beer jug, it stands 195 mm (7.75 inches) high and has a diameter of 138 mm (5.5 inches). The base is marked with an impressed shape number 1418, and 1 L to indicate the capacity is 1 litre. It was made by the firm of Johann Wilhelm Remy, of Hohr, then in Prussia. It is in very good condition and dates from around 1890.
