About this item

This is an interesting ring, dating to the late 15th-early 16th century. The ring is of the shape used for an iconographic ring, usually with engraved images of saints on the panels. During the 16th century, during the Reformation, such images were routinely erased or destroyed at the King's (Henry VIII) demand. This ring has vestiges of a design that appears to have been erased on purpose; as such, it may be a direct link with this turbulent period, embodied in a ring!  See BM-D83D1C, SF-7C7B56, and CORN-632D6E for examples of similar rings.
