About this item
This straw work needlecase was made in the early part of the nineteenth century and was decorated by applying individual pieces of dyed straw on to a cardboard base to form an intricate pattern. Items like this were made by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars to obtain money for necessities, but they had also been made both prior to, and after the wars. The needlecase is 60 mm (2.5 inches) long, 25 mm (1 inch) wide and 10 mm (3/8th of an inch) thick and is in good condition, but showing signs of use. It contains three old needles.
