An Aesthetic Movement Ebonised Parlour Sofa Designed By E.w. Godwin

A rare E.W. Godwin (1833-1886), ebonised, Aesthetic Movement, parlour sofa. Originally manufactured by James Peddle of High Wycombe in the 1880s

Weeks of work were undertaken, by our skilled craftspeople, to fully-restore this piece. It has been re-webbed, re-sprung and lashed, and has fresh hessian, horsehair (secured by bridle ties), cotton felt and new FR calico. The wood has been cleaned, traditionally waxed and buffed to a beautiful sheen.

Sitting on ring-turned and block legs, the sofa has been reupholstered in 100% woven, cotton velvet by the house of Nobilis, Paris. The dazzling metamorphic green and black velvet creates a harmonious alliance with the ebonised wood.

Looking to Japan for inspiration, E.W. Godwin’s minimalist style was a reaction to the heavily ornate furniture styles of the mid-19th century.

Largely undecorated ebonised wood and sculptural lightness of form, all the influence of Japanese Arts and Crafts, are the key ‘signatures’ of Godwin’s pieces and echo the ideals of the Aesthetic Movement.

Godwin was not, however, limited to a singular style as he was also inspired by Gothic, Chinese, Greek, Egyptian and Jacobean furniture. Above all, his desire was to create modern, functional pieces that were also exceptionally elegant.

Since its incorporation in 1928, the French fabric house of Nobilis has utilised its vast experience to produce a diverse range of designs; from the traditional to the modern. French elegance emanates from their fabric, rugs, furniture and wallpaper collections.

Houlès designs and creates the finest of trimmings and fabrics. Still family-owned, the  company was established in Paris, by father and son Félix and André Houlès, in 1928. The company, which began with one store at 18 rue Saint-Nicolas, is now established in over 160 countries.

Presidential residences and castles, such as le Château de Versailles, often select Houlès’ passements for their restoration projects.
