About this item
A steel ice, or sugar cleaver in the shape of a horse. Decorative cleavers, of this type, were used in the confectioner’s kitchens for chopping the cones of sugar or the huge blocks of ice. This one is well shaped, as a horse, and the steel is hand forged. It is marked, on both sides of the blade ‘M.F.’, and it is also marked ‘M.M’ on the horse. These could be the initials of a previous owner or of the maker. The handle is turned from wood and it is attached with copper fittings. It dates from c.1880 and it is in excellent condition.
