A mid 19th century Ceylonese superb quality carved solid ebony footstool from the Galle district of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN B VIEWED BELOW:
This superb footstool consists of an original cane seat, the finely carved rails with central scallop shell and acanthus carved decoration to the centre with stylised floral designs to each corner.
The footstool is supported by four bulbous turned and fluted legs terminating with turned feet.
The Galle district is an area in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was renowned in the 19th century for the production of superbly carved items of furniture particularly made of ebony.
This footstool is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
Reference: various pieces of ebony furniture with similar carved decoration can be seen in the book 'Furniture from British India & Ceylon' by Amin Jaffer – pages 371 & 378.
