About this item
Huge silk tapestry, 240cm x 204cm, in superb condition. Dating to the early 20th century
Profusely embroidered with an exotic, Arabic theme. Featuring turbaned elephant, horse and camel riders among date palms and cacti.
Machine embroidered on a high quality, heavy, Indigo/Purple silk ground with a limited colour palette of Gold, Olive Green and Lilac. The ground can appear a range of colours dependant on how the light is hitting it, from Purple to Royal Blue. The fringing uses the same colour silk as the ground but, not being sheer, reflects the colour more accurately both in our images and in the flesh.
The piece is fringed to three sides and plain on the top edge. This suggests, along with the size and the heavy, durable quality of the textile, that it was created as a bedspread. It can certainly be used as one, it comfortably reaches the floor either side of a super king bed. Looks amazing as a wall hanging tapestry or a window/door curtain. A very versatile and attractive piece.
Condition:
Some pulls and loose threads to the fringing, minimal and has little impact overall. One small repair where an area of fringe has pulled apart and been sewn back together. Some small areas of staining to the ground. These may come out but are in our opinion not worth the risk of damaging the silk. Please see images, we can send more on request if needed.
