About this item

The Essentials

Mid-19th century Dutch table tobacco casket Brass-clad wooden construction Engraved owner's monogram and punched decoration Four claw-and-ball feet with side carrying handles Good antique condition with age-related wear and patina, one handle is missing

Description

This Dutch tobacco casket dates from the middle of the 19th century and was made as a substantial table box for storing tobacco and smoking accessories. The wooden chest is completely clad in hand-worked brass, with a hinged locking plate, carrying rings and cast claw-and-ball feet giving it the form of a miniature travelling coffer.

The lid is centred by a large engraved owner's monogram, with further punched decoration worked around the border and a line of tiny hearts around the lock. Those personal details are an important part of the box, turning a practical tobacco casket into personal piece of history.
