About this item
A Goblet Shape Burmese Lacquer 'Khwet' (Cup)
Mandalay or Pagan (Burma/Myanmar)
Lacquered woven bamboo
Mid-20th Century
Measures:-
10.5 cm high x 11 cm diameter (at the rim)
A very decorative lacquer 'khwet' (cup) . The technique of decoration involves various layers of coloured lacquer which are then engraved through to the colours beneath or colour-filled. This method is known as 'yun', the designs etched using a metal stylus to scratch through (sometimes as many as three or four different colours are used on the same piece, as can be seen here). There are various bands of decoration with a central motif with various geometric cartouches, each containing a peacock.
Good condition. Some losses and cracking to the rim, crack and a chip to the lacquer towards the foot.
