About this item
A pair of late 19th century stilt shoes, also known as bath shoes or qabqab. These were made for wealthy ladies to wear when they attended public bathhouses, the 'stilts' elevating them above hot, wet and dirty floors. This pair is made of a hard wood inlaid with engraved mother of pearl, brass and steel. They would originally have had straps made of leather or cloth, to attach them to the feet. They probably originated from Ottoman Turkey or Egypt.
They are in good original condition with an attractive aged patina.
