About this item
On the occasion of funerals, masked dancers perform a pantomime that highlights their origins and traditions. They pay tribute to the creation of their kingdom. Although a man wears the Ngady Mwaash face mask, it honours the importance of the Kuba woman in their community. This headdress, combined with the Ngady Mwaash face mask, is richly decorated with cowrie shells and tiny beads. The use of colour of the beads is symbolically charged. The blue colour stands for high status; white expresses mourning, and red evokes suffering.
