A superb late Victorian silver wine jug in an unusual aesthetic type style with straight sided tapering plain polished body with sharply indented shoulders, raised curved spout with unusual hinged cover inside and square topped strap handle with lion mask lower terminal. The shoulder and lower neck has embossed decoration of concave, stepped rings framed with a stylised organic style decorative edging. The same double band sandwiches a simple band running around the lower part of the main body. Set on a domed circular foot. The hinged cover inside the spout sits within an inset frame with flush hinge and ornate cast thumb catch.
Hallmarked for London 1895, maker Henry Stratford and further retailer mark to the base.
It measures 25.5cm (10") high and 11.5cm (4 1/2") wide. It weighs 742g / 23.9ozt. It has a capacity of 900ml / 1 1/2 pints.
In excellent condition with no damage, dents or repair and very minor handling wear. The inset hinged cover shows traces of previous gilding.
