A Very Fine Victorian Silver Plated Claret Jug

26.5 cm high
Marked with the crowned "E&Co" to the hinge and various other plate marks. Rim with registration/pattern number "C3944".
A beautiful claret jug by Elkington & Co. The collar decorated with Maenad / Bacchante masks, scrolling vines, vine-leaves and grapes, with a Dionysus / Bacchus mask to the spout, covered with a hinged lid with a gadrooned border, a lion rampant thumb-piece finial supporting a shield with a neatly engraved armorial. The compressed ovoid body of lead crystal glass wheel-engraved by hand with a fine pattern of trailing vines, leaves and bunches of grapes, a wheel-cut starburst to the base. Solid integral handle.
A very practical and extremely elegant claret jug.
Condition:-
Excellent condition. Gentle wear commensurate with age. A spot of very slight thinning to the plate to the inside of the inner rim revealing the copper beneath.
