About this item
Fabulous c1900's oak frame Orkney chair (adult size) with intricately woven straw and marram grass back and drop in seat. The high back was designed to help exclude the icy blasts and drafts of the Orcadian archipelago. A cottage industry in the Orkney isles off the north coast of Scotland until 1890, then discovered by buyers from the mainland and beyond. Most famous of these was exclusive department store Liberties of London who sold many of these chairs. There was and is still a certain romance about these chairs and are still highly sought after.
Condition excellent . No faults or repairs. Beautiful patination and completely original.
