The Essentials
Traditional Afghan rubab dating to around 1900 Carved hardwood with animal-skin soundboard and bone and shell inlay Bird, flower and rosette decoration with engraved ring-and-dot detail Original arrangement for melody, drone and sympathetic strings Missing the strings, other sections may need replacingDescription
This is a traditional Afghan rubab, the short-necked lute that became the best-known instrument of Afghan music.
Its main strings were played with a plectrum, with drone and sympathetic strings adding the resonant layer that gives the rubab its distinctive sound and made it important in both Afghan folk and classical music.
The dense bird and flower inlay has an unusually close parallel in the National Music Museum's Afghan rubab dated c.1875-1925, including the same engraved ring-and-dot circles and pale inlay set into black paste.
