About this item

The Essentials

Zulu iwisa or knobkerrie throwing club Early 20th century Single-piece dense hardwood construction Natural root or knot used to form the weighted head Fair antique condition with old splits and small losses

Description

A Zulu iwisa or knobkerrie made as a working club for hunting, personal defence and throwing. The shaft and heavy rounded head were cut from one piece of hardwood, using the natural root or knot to place the greatest weight at the striking end.

The iwisa was also carried as part of male everyday dress, making it a weapon, walking companion and personal possession. The drilled butt was made to take a cord, while the plain construction comes directly from its purpose, with a long resilient shaft and no separate joint to weaken the head.
