FS0298 LARGE RECLAIMED VICTORIAN PAINTED PINE AND GESSO FIRE SURROUND

A large and very elegant, reclaimed, painted pine and gesso fire surround dating to the late Victorian period, C.1890. The surround has a graceful appearance with gesso and pine detailing. The crossbar has a central panel with a fruit and wheat design and there are acanthus leaves on either side of the panel. The surround has intricate borders around the fire opening, with one featuring leaves and the other, small flowers. There is repeating leaf decoration under the mantel and an ornate border around the front and side edges of the mantel. The fire surround has been painted white but please note the paint has suffered some losses and there are some cracks and flaking.

The fire surround is in good antique condition with some signs of age and wear, as expected. One of the surrounds feet has had a notch cut out at the bottom. The pine has some knocks and chips. The paint has some indentations on the side of the legs, from where it was originally fitted. The sides of the legs have a few small holes. There is a crack to one of the top corners of the larger border that surrounds the fire opening. Please see pictures for condition details. The surround is a fine example of late Victorian design and has a very elegant look and it would make a wonderful period feature for a fireplace.
