About this item
This is an antique decorative ammonite on plinth. An English, fossilised geological ornamental nautilus fossil, dating to the late Victorian period and earlier.
Ammonites evolved in the ocean between 240,000,000 - 65,000,000 years ago and faced extinction alongside the dinosaurs. Ammonite comes from the Greek god Ammon, and was an ancient relative of modern cephalopods such as squid, nautilus and cuttlefish.
