    Gold English Full Plate Chronometer.

    Signed: Rd Clarke & Sons Cheapside, London. Circa: 1823. Diameter: 55 mm. Depth: 14.5 mm.

    A fine early 19th Century English full plate spring detent chronometer in a decorative gold open face case. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement, Harrison's maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone in a blue steel setting. Large compensation balance, two wedge shaped weights secured by polished steel plates.

    Freesprung helical with blue steel hairspring. Earnshaw type spring detent chronometer escapement, jewelled locking, discharging and impulse stones. Screwed in jewelling, escape pivots with endstones. Matted gold dial with subsidiary seconds, applied gold Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gold hands.

    Substantial engine turned 18 carat open face case with decorative chased and engraved repousse middle, maker's mark TH in a rectangle and number corresponding to that on the movement.

    In excellent overall condition. Richard Clarke & Sons , 62 Cheapside, 1797-1829. In addition to retailing jewellery and watches their name and address is also found on high class pistols of the period. Casemaker Thomas Hardy who was favoured by a number of eminent chronometer makers including Arnold and Earnshaw.
