About this item
A Pair of rare Chinese republic era wedding baskets. The use of red lacquer and gilding provides a visual contrast against the mainly black baskets. The sides of the basket are elaborately decorated with carved flowers and auspicious symbols. Starting with a pair of bats, the symbols of good fortune, continuing to gilded peonies, signs of prosperity, the baskets are adorned with extensive scroll works flanking the main panels which are inset with crushed mother of pearl. Original circular openings were intended for bamboo poles to go through for transportation purpose. Maker's sign on the top bar date these pieces to year 1930. Solid wood. Hand-carved. Tenons and mortises. Dimensions are of each piece.
