Full Description
A highly decorative pair of early 19th-century English portrait paintings on glass, depicting two elegantly dressed ladies in the celebrated style of Thomas Gainsborough. Dating from circa 1830, the portraits are executed in reverse-painted oil on glass, a fascinating and technically demanding form of decorative painting.
The portraits capture the refined character of Georgian and early Victorian society, with the sitters presented in elegant dress and composed in the manner of fashionable portraiture of the period. Their association with the Gainsborough style gives the pair a particularly graceful and sophisticated quality.
Both portraits retain their original Hogarth-style frames, an important part of their character and presentation. The bold, shaped frames provide a wonderful contrast to the delicate portraiture and enhance the period appearance of the pair.
The reverse-painted technique involves applying the paint to the back of the glass, allowing the image to be viewed through the glass from the front. This produces a distinctive depth and luminosity to the finished portraits and makes surviving examples particularly appealing to collectors of antique paintings and decorative works on glass.
The portraits are presented in original condition, with minor lifting beneath the glass and minor losses to the frames, all consistent with their considerable age. Please see photographs, which form part of the condition report.
A superb and unusual pair of English antique portraits, combining elegant early 19th-century portraiture, original Hogarth-style frames and the atmospheric qualities of reverse-painted glass.
