Item of the week
18th Century Oak Norman Marriage bed
Dealer: French Farmhouse Furniture
Continuing with January’s theme of comfort, this week’s Item of the Week is this lovely late 18th century Louis XVI period oak Norman marriage double bed. Longer nights, nowhere to go, and commuting time cut down to a walk down the stairs, means that we are all likely to be spending more time in bed – why not add a bit of French romance to the room? Marriage beds were traditionally the first bed that a man and woman would share as a married couple, and they were often carved with symbols that were relevant to the couple.
This beautiful example features stylised mouldings of wheatsheaves and bread oven paddles, so it is likely that the family were bakers or millers, while the small bagpipe is a Loure, which was an instrument that was popular in the 17th and 18th century French courts.
In excellent condition, the bed is fitted with new wooden slats and a centre bar, and will take a standard double mattress.
Price: £1,895
