    About this item

A superb piece of sailors work, is this very nicely carved fid, which is used to hold open knots and holes in canvas, and to separate the "lays" of natural rope for splicing.....it is made of "marine ivory" , probably Whalebone and is pointed at one end, with a rounded finial at the top end.......excellent colour and condition.

    English / Yorkshire. C1840-60.
