About this item
A fine pair of 19thc whalebone sailors fids....the fids primary use is for holding open knots and holes in canvas on the sailing ships used in the 19thc and were also used to open and separate the strands of rope when splicing..... small fids such as these were also used for the bolt ropes.... these are the ropes that are sewn at the edges of the sail to reinforce them.....both fids are in very good condition with a mellow colour, that comes from years of use.
English - Yorkshire. C1860-80.
