Description

This is a pair of official United States Navy presentation plaques given during HMY Britannia’s documented visit to California in early 1988, one from USS Missouri and one from Naval Station Long Beach. They are formal exchange pieces presented at command level, tied to specific dates and engraved. They represent a rare physical diplomatic meeting between the US and the UK in the closing era of the Cold War.

The USS Missouri piece is a heavy bronze casting featuring the ship crest and the Latin motto for Strength for Freedom. The February date marks a specific diplomatic dinner held on the yacht in San Diego, while the Long Beach plaque was presented just days later during a major conference on board the vessel. This one has the named manufacturer in Crestor Inc, a known supplier of US naval presentation plaques in this period.

These were almost certainly kept as part of the Admiral’s personal collection and represent a rare exchange between the most famous ships in maritime history. They record a unique meetings that happened during the final decade of the Royal Yacht’s service.
