About this item

Introduction to coastal watercolours

British coastal watercolours remained popular well into the early 20th century, especially views of working harbours, fishing boats, and recognisable shoreline landmarks. Titled local scenes had a ready audience because they sat neatly between souvenir, memory piece, and decorative picture.

Description of the painting

This is a horizontal watercolour on paper, framed under glass, showing a quiet coastal scene at low tide. A two masted boat sits beached in the shallows, while a stone harbour wall stretches across the right side with further masts rising beyond it.

The painting is handled in soft subdued tones, with pale blue water, a light sky, and broad brown and mauve washes across the beach. The cliffs behind the harbour give the scene its structure, while the distant sails on the horizon keep the whole composition open and calm rather than crowded. Lower left, the image is titled by hand “Dunbarton Head”. This likely refers to the old spelling split between Dumbarton and Dunbartonshire,

Condition

There is light age related wear and some minor marks, the frame has general wear from age and handling. Overall it remains in good condition.

Why You Should Buy

It has the kind of quiet coastal atmosphere that makes a room feel more settled the moment you hang it.
