    About this item

A fine quality mid 18thc brass "crusie" lamp with the unusual feature of five wick rest points....I have only seen the four point wick rests before....it has double valves, joined by early rolled brass rivets and the top valve is adjustable.....not common in brass as constant use would mean a lot of cleaning, usually the crusie lamps are made of wrought iron or bronze....I think this one is from a high status house and so would not be in constant use....the lamp would be run on fish oil or vegetable oil and the wicks laid in the "rest" with one end in the oil....beautifully decorated with punchwork, which you find on Dutch chambersticks of this period....

    Continental - Dutch / Spanish.  C1760-80.
