About this item
A nice survival from the late 16thc is this stoneware salt-glazed wine jug known as a Raeren...many have been found in this country as wine was imported from Germany into England in the 16thc and 17thc in stoneware jugs such as these....this one is of a lobed pot-bellied form and is decorated with panels of pressed foliate decoration and also with a "rilled" shaped neck....in very good condition with small chips on the neck and a small chip on the handle....amazing when you think of the age...!
Provenance: Bought in Bruges from a dealer in early pottery. German. C1570-90.
